As information and technology continues to change how we do things, society needs people who can:
- think critically about complex issues;
- analyze and adapt to new situations;
- solve problems of various kinds; and
- communicate their thinking.
Math gives students knowledge, skills and habits that are needed for success in the future.
A student in Junior Kindergarten in 2018 will graduate in 2032. Our goal at HWDSB, is to prepare them to succeed in a world we can’t imagine yet.

The Ministry of Education recently released A Parent’s Guide to the Fundamentals of Math. This resource provides an overview of what Ontario students in Grades 1-8 are learning in math, and how families can support their child’s math learning at home.
The following are highlights of student learning in each grade. They offer a quick overview of the mathematical knowledge and skills that students should learn in each strand in this grade.

Offers a number of fun, interactive virtual games. Electronic and print versions are also available for download. These games help students understand key mathematical concepts. Games continue to be developed by the Ontario Ministry of Education and support teaching and learning strategies commonly used in today’s mathematics classrooms.

Allows students to explore and deepen understanding of mathematical concepts. Electronic and print versions are also available for download. Learning Tools continue to be developed by The Ontario Ministry of Education and are similar to the manipulatives students commonly use in today’s classrooms.

A free online resource for grade 7 to 10 Ontario math students. It provides 24/7 resources and real time one on one online tutoring with Ontario Certified Teachers. Tutors are available during the school year 5:30 to 9:30 ET from Sunday to Thursday. Homework Help tutors will help students understand mathematical concepts they started learning in class.
Partnering with your Teen in Mathematics (Grades 7-12)
Provides information for parents, guardians, caregivers, and other family members on ways to support the development of their teen’s mathematical abilities. This document contains information on understanding the adolescent learner, different ways of learning, engaging in conversations with your teen, and supporting mathematical thinking, learning and work habits.

Renewed Math Strategy Resources
A series of resources for parents to help explain Ontario’s Renewed Math Strategy
HWDSB has made a commitment to continuing to work with Principals and teachers to identify and share effective and innovative learning, teaching and leading practices through the development of a Renewed Math Strategy.
Vision of the Math Learner
HWDSB’s math strategy supports students to build a solid foundation that will enable them to apply their knowledge in the classroom and the real world. It also provides teachers with the skills and tools to implement effective mathematics teaching, which the organization believes will lead to improved student outcomes.
Teachers and principals are a big focus of our Renewed Math Strategy. Our professional learning plan features learning opportunities for principals and teachers. This includes monthly learning sessions for principals that are designed to build an understanding of the instructional practices supporting the development of operational sense and quantity relationships.
The strategy focuses on two key strategies for teachers to implement:
- Knowing our learners through formative assessment – What they know and do not know
- Responding to student learning need through targeted instruction – building on knowledge to address what is not known.
Teachers are also offered two in-house Ontario College of Teachers additional qualification courses in mathematics. These courses help our staff build professional knowledge and improve their teaching practice.
