Remote/In-Person Elementary Transition 2021

Dear Elementary Parents and Guardians,

Families have been asked to make several difficult decisions during this pandemic related to the education of your child/ren. We know it is even more challenging now as we face a fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic this fall.

As communicated in our August update to families, we are offering an opportunity for elementary students to transition between remote and in-person learning on October 7.  Families who wish to switch between remote and in-person learning must complete the Remote Learning Survey (Sept 2021) form in the Parent Portal.

This form will be available in the Parent Portal and opens on Friday, September 3 at 9:00 a.m. It will close on Friday, September 10 at 11:59 p.m. Only complete this form if you would like to request a change in delivery model.

If you have difficulty with the Parent Portal it is necessary that you make contact with your child’s school before the end of the school day on Friday September 10.

If we do not hear from you, your child/ren’s placement stays the same.

Access the Parent Portal Here.

Parents and guardians who choose to change delivery model will start the school year in their original placement. Transition between delivery models will take place on October 7. Families who do not wish to participate in in-person learning ahead of the transition date can contact their home school for resources to assist with at-home learning ahead of the official transition.

Families interested in transitioning to the remote learning model are invited to attend a parent information session on Wednesday, September 1 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on MS Teams. Click this link to join the session.

Important Questions and Answers

Questions  Answers
When is the form available?  The form in the Parent Portal will open on Friday, September 3 at 9:00 a.m. It will close on Friday, September 10 at 11:59 p.m.
What is the form called?  Remote Learning Survey (Sept 2021)
What does the form say?  The form provides two options:

  • I want to switch my child to remote (at home) learning.
  • I want to switch my child to in-person (in school) learning.
How will I know my choice is registered?  Once you have submitted your choice, a pop-up message that says “Thank you” will appear. This acknowledgement confirms your choice is registered. You can also reference your Parent Portal dashboard where it shows completed forms.
What is the date from in-person to remote?   The transition date is Thursday, October 7, 2021.
Will there be another transition this year?  Transition requests will be considered where there are extraordinary circumstances.
Can we move back and forth between in-person and remote?  Transitions disrupt student learning. Families should consider Remote Learning as a full year placement. Families making a transition will stay in their new school for the rest of the year, unless there is an extraordinary circumstance.
Do I need an HWDSB device to access remote learning?  No. You are welcome to use any personal digital device that can access MS Teams and the HUB learning platform.

Parent Portal Support

The Parent Portal is the first and preferred method to register your choice. Some parents, however, may need assistance if you are unable to access the Parent Portal.

Call your school or email using the Elementary School Emails listing if you are unable to access the Parent Portal.

School office staff will input your choice into HWDSB’s student information system if accessing the Parent Portal is a barrier.

Parents and guardians from the remote learning school can contact the main office for support.

Each family is experiencing their own unique circumstance at this time. We will continue to be flexible and review requests for students to transition at any time, based on changes to family circumstances. Contact your principal at any time to initiate that established process.

Thank you,

Manny Figueiredo
Director of Education
