Continuing Education 2024 Summer Programs

As summer is inching closer, consider registering for one of HWDSB’s Continuing EducationContinuing Education logo programs before time runs out! With a wide variety of summer programs, students can continue learning throughout the summer.

Continuing Education has you covered this summer! From activity-based literacy and math programs, learning another language, taking a summer credit course, preparing for secondary school, or Adult English Language programs, there is something for everyone. Check out the Summer Programs Brochure to learn more!

Thank you to those who have already registered for summer programs. If you’re interested in enrolling in a program this summer, apply soon! The registration deadlines are quickly approaching and have limited spaces.

Program Eligible Grades Program Description Deadline to register
Reach Ahead (Credit Program) Students currently in Grade 8 We are offering Civics and Careers courses to all Grade 8 students who will progress to Grade 9 in the fall. These open level half-credit courses can be taken individually (nine days) or in combination (18 days). This is the only credit program available to students reaching ahead before Grade 9. These courses will be offered online. Courses are offered in both English and French.

NEW for 2024 – a limited number of spaces are available for Grade 8 students to earn an in-person Technology credit. Construction and Cosmetology courses will be offered at Bernie Custis and Nora F. Henderson Secondary Schools.

Summer Credit Recovery Program Current HWDSB students with a final grade of less than 50% in an available credit recovery course Summer is the time to get back on track! HWDSB Continuing Education is offering a Credit Recovery opportunity for HWDSB students recommended by their day school. Credit Recovery is an on-line program available to students who had a final grade of less than 50% during the 2023-2024 or the 2022-2023 school years in the courses offered. Students can recover one or two credits. Session 1 runs July 3-15 and Session 2 runs July 16-26. Apply for Session 1 by 4 p.m. June 27, 2024 or for Session 2 by 8 a.m. July 11, 2024.

Summer Learning Strategies Courses (Credit Program) Students currently in grades 8 to 12 (with Individual Education Plans) Summer Learning Strategies credit program helps students become better, more independent learners. Students will learn how to develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal management skills, and interpersonal and teamwork skills to narrow learning gaps and improve their learning and achievement in school, the workplace, and the community. 8 a.m. on June 10, 2024

Summer ESL Credit Program Student currently in grades 9-12 who have successfully completed ESLCO1. These programs are co-located with our ESL Literacy and Numeracy programs at Bernie Custis and Nora F. Henderson Secondary Schools – ESLDO1 & ESLEO1 courses – ask your school for more details. 8 a.m. on June 10, 2024

Summer School Online (Credit Program) Students currently in Grades 9-12 and Adults A wide variety of full credit courses will be available through Summer School Online. Courses start July 3rd and end July 26th. On-line teacher support daily. 4 p.m. on June 27, 2024
International Languages Elementary Program Students currently in Grades Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 International Languages Elementary classes provide academic instruction in languages other than English and French. Available languages this summer: Arabic, Korean and Urdu. July 3 to 26, 2024. Monday to Friday, program times vary by location. 8 a.m. on June 10, 2024
Summer Skill Builder Non-Credit Students currently in grades 6 to 10 Enrich and develop literacy and numeracy skills through participation in these in-person, fun, free summer activities. Programs are offered in one-week blocks starting July 10 through August 11 – morning and afternoon programs available. Art, coding and sports-based programs are also available to help keep your student engaged in learning this summer. NEW for 2024 – Food Handler and Literacy course including certification for students in grade 9-12. 8 a.m. on June 10, 2024
Summer ESL Literacy and Numeracy (non-credit) Programs
Students currently in grades 6 to 12 (ESL Level 3/CO or lower) ESL students in grades 6 to 12 are encouraged to join our ESL Literacy Summer program to strengthen their literacy skills this summer. We are pleased to add an ESL Numeracy program for students to work on language skills related to Math and Science as well as math concepts. (Level 3/CO or lower). 8 a.m. on June 10, 2024

Adult ESL Summer School
Adult English Language Learners (language assessment is required – we can help!) 4-week program provides the opportunity for formal language training in the four skill areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You will complete at least one assessment in each skill area. Classes are offered at Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 1 to 7, plus Literacy at both Hill Park Learning Centre (mountain) and City Learning Centre (downtown). July 2 to 26, 2024. Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 2:05 pm. LINC Childcare and Camp programs available for children 6 months to 10 years old at Hill Park only. While spaces are still available.
