Summer Programs for English Language Learners

Program Dates and Times

Dates: Wednesday, July 3 to Friday, July 26, 2024
Times: In person – 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
Credit Programs include an additional 2 hours per day of remote learning (may be synchronous or asynchronous)
Locations:   Bernie Custis and Nora F. Henderson Secondary Schools

Application for these programs will open on April 1, 2024 and will close on June 10 at 8:00 a.m.

Program Benefits

The goals of HWDSB’s ESL/ELD programs are to:

  • Assist the Newcomer with English language acquisition;
  • Provide orientation to Canadian society and culture;
  • Develop basic interpersonal communication skills in English;
  • Enable students to graduate from Secondary Schools with the academic language and skills needed to be successful in Canadian post-secondary institutions and workplaces.

Summer Program for English Language Learners supports our Day School ESL/ELL programs and helps students continue to improve their English language acquisition during the summer.

Summer ESL Literacy and (NEW!) Summer ESL Numeracy Non-Credit Programs

18 day summer non-credit literacy and numeracy focused camps that is designed to support our Day School ESL/ELL programs and helps students continue to improve their English language acquisition, or their Math skills during the summer.

Eligibility:  English Language Learners in Grades 6-12, level 3 or lower

Locations available:  Bernie Custis Secondary School and Nora F. Henderson Secondary School

Dates: Monday to Friday, July 3 to 26, 2024

Times: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily

Apply:  Contact your ESL Teacher, Guidance Counsellor or Principal to apply.

Application opens April 1 and closes June 10, 2024 at 8 a.m.

Visa students, visitors and students who did not attend an Ontario school in 2023-2024 may attend for a fee of $450.  Fees must be paid in advance through Hill Park Learning Centre, 465 East 16th Street, Hamilton.  An on-line payment link will be provided.

Summer ESL Credit Program

An 18 day credit program with an in-person synchronous program running 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily, and an additional 2 hours of remote learning each day.  This program will help ESL students to fast-track their English Language studies and language acquisition to help them graduate by the end of Year 5.  Courses offered: ESLDO1 and ESLEO1

Eligibility:  English Language Learners in Grades 8-12, Level 3 or has successfully completed ESLCO1

Locations available:  Bernie Custis Secondary School and Nora F. Henderson Secondary School

Dates: Monday to Friday, July 3 to 26, 2024

Times: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily, plus 2 hours each day of remote learning (may be synchronous or asynchronous)

Visa students may attend for a fee.  Please contact the Admissions Office at 905-521-2554 or [email protected] for information on fees and to arrange payment.  Fees must be paid in advance through the Welcome Centre, located in the Hill Park Learning Centre, 465 East 16th Street, Hamilton.

Students from outside HWDSB need to complete the student registration process and ALSO apply for the program.  Please contact the Continuing Education Hill Park Learning Centre by phone at 905-561-2190 or email us at [email protected] for additional information.  Only the Summer ESL Literacy Non-Credit and Credit programs are available to non-HWDSB students.  Fees may apply based on program eligibility.

Program Information

  • Programs are at NO COST to eligible students
  • Programs are designed to make learning fun and engaging
  • Good attitude, behaviour and attendance is expected of every student
  • Students are encouraged to bring school supplies and nut free snacks and drinks each day
  • Programs will run if there are sufficient numbers. There must be 12-15 students registered and attending the program
  • Confirmation of your student’s acceptance will be emailed the week of June 17th. If you don’t receive the confirmation by June 24th, please contact the Hill Park Learning Centre for assistance at [email protected]
  • Application can be completed by your student’s Principal (Elementary Schools), Guidance Counselor or ESL Teacher.
