Hamilton Police Service Respond to School Threats

Today, Hamilton Police Service issued the following Hamilton Police Investigate School Threats.

The safety of students and staff is our top priority. We are concerned with the recent events and thank the Hamilton Police Service for issuing their statement to the community.

HWDSB and the Hamilton Police Service fully investigates each threat to ensure our schools remain safe, inclusive and welcoming places.

We must take seriously any threat against a school community. Any person who makes a threat must know that they will be held accountable.

Students and staff have a right to learn in a safe environment.

Incidents at Hillcrest, Westdale, and Bennetto took place that required a communication to each school community.

HWDSB is also investigating this incident further under our Student Behaviour and Discipline Policy and will take appropriate action.

We take incidents like these very seriously. We continue to work with our school community to ensure students understand the impact threats have on individuals and the overall school climate.

We know this situation may make students anxious or upset. If so, you may want to refer to tips for adults supporting children and youth after distressing events. Students and families are encouraged to reach out to staff for support.

Students may wish to use the HWDSB Helps app, an anonymous way to find help for themselves for one another. Students can text 905-963-0066, download the app for iOS and Android, or engage in the web chat at www.hwdsb.on.ca/hwdsbhelps.
