Incident at school today

Dear Bennetto families,

This is a letter to inform you about an incident that occurred at our school today.

A student brought a pellet gun into our school, which is strictly prohibited. Staff quickly removed the weapon from the student’s possession. No weapon is ever permitted on school property or school transportation.

The item was not used. Students were not in danger. Staff addressed the situation immediately and followed safe schools protocols. Police attended our school to provide support.

This is an important reminder to ensure that all students know how seriously we take safety at our school. Please speak with your children about never bringing a weapon to school and the consequences involved. We have clear requirements for considering suspension, expulsion and reporting to police.

We know this situation may make students anxious or upset. If so, you may want to refer to tips for adults supporting children and youth after distressing events. Students and families are encouraged to reach out to staff for support.

Students may wish to use the HWDSB Helps app, an anonymous way to find help for themselves for one another. Students can text 905-963-0066, download the app for iOS and Android, or engage in the web chat at www.hwdsb.on.ca/hwdsbhelps.

If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Black
Acting Principal
