Social Work Week 2024 – March 4 to 10

social work week graphicThe first full week of March marks Social Work Week in Ontario. This week serves as an opportunity for us to recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of social workers in HWDSB school communities and across the province.

Social workers play an essential role in the daily lives of students, fostering well-being and contributing to academic achievement. HWDSB social workers help students by supporting mental well-being, leading therapeutic groups, addressing important social issues, and so much more. With over 20,000 social workers across Ontario, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated social workers of HWDSB who help make up this vital network of support. This year’s theme, Social Work Opens Doors, speaks to the many ways that social workers help Ontarians open doors to greater mental well-being, safety, and stability. We are so grateful for the efforts of HWDSB social workers who create valuable new  pathways for those they support, making an invaluable impact on the lives of those in our community. HWDSB social workers support in ways that exemplify Compassion, Dignity, and Trust, with the goal of supporting students and families to experience Joy.

March 4 to 10 also marks Black Mental Health Week, which aims to raise awareness to the historical and current effects of systemic, anti-Black racism on mental health and wellness. This year’s theme of Growth and Reflection speaks to the diverse and essential nature of social workers’ roles. They have a pivotal role in fostering personal and collective growth, advocating for inclusive mental health services, and opening doors to resources that contribute to the well-being and resilience of the Black community.

Please join me in thanking HWDSB social workers for all they do for students, staff, families, and the wider community.

In appreciation,

Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
Director of Education
