Secondary School Course Selections Can Now Be Approved in Parent Portal

Secondary school students, as well as Grade 8 students entering secondary schools in September and returning Grade 12 students, recently submitted their course selections for the 2022-2023 school year. This process was completed using the XELLO platform.

Now that this process is complete, parents/guardians must review and approve their student’s course selections. Courses requests can be accessed via the Parent Portal beginning March 11 at 3:00 p.m. Please review and approve your student’s selections as soon as you can to help ensure their placements in their requested courses.

Instructions for Parents/Guardians to Approve.

  1. After logging in to the Parent Portal, parents/guardians will be able to access course selection information under Class Registration.
  2. To verify student course selections, click View course requests.
  3. To approve course requests, click the box beside Approve Schedule for Student.
  4. Approval can also be done by calling the secondary school if Parent Portal is not an option.

De-Streaming

Beginning in September 2022 all Grade 9 courses subjects will be offered in one stream. This is the final step in the de-streaming process, which began with Grade 9 math courses in September 2021.

De-streaming is an important equity measure that ends the practice of placing students into “academic” or “applied” courses. Research has shown that streaming has created negative outcomes and has limited opportunities for post-secondary advancement for many students.

You can learn more about De-Streaming in Grade 9 in our De-Streaming Virtual Information Night re-cap here.
