International Women’s Day – March 8, 2024

On March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day – a global celebration dedicated toInternational Women's Day honouring the strength and influence of women around us while advocating for gender equality. It is an opportunity to commemorate the achievements of women, and those who identify as a woman, socially, economically, and culturally.

Originating in the early twentieth century, International Women’s Day first emerged when activities of labour movements within North America and Europe began to reflect a growing call for women’s equal participation in society. Since then, the occasion is a chance to observe women’s achievements and serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality while highlighting the work that still needs to be done.

While there has been progress in some areas, the unfortunate reality is that women collectively encounter more daily challenges in education, politics, health care, and economics. These obstacles can be compounded for folks from Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, and other marginalized groups. It is critical that more progress is made to reach gender equality to ensure a sustainable future for people of all identities and backgrounds.

The 2024 theme, #InspireInclusion, urges us to discuss the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society. Inclusion is crucial in achieving gender equality. It is important to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women.

At HWDSB, we can #InspireInclusion by challenging stereotypes, fostering continuous education, sharing stories from diverse backgrounds, and offering support and resources to empower others. These steps are critical for the social, economic, cultural, and political advancements of women.

We encourage everyone to use today as an opportunity to pause and celebrate the achievements and successes of women both locally and internationally. Everyone everywhere can #InspireInclusion. Together, let’s continue to break down barriers and strive for a world where all women are empowered, valued, and included.
