HWDSB Prepares for 13 New Schools or Additions

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) Trustees discussed plans for nine new school openings and four additions, through a staff report at the Finance and Facilities Committee meeting on November 14, 2018.

“HWDSB conducted several Pupil Accommodation Reviews over the years that resulted in provincial funding to combine schools, build new schools, and accommodate growth areas,” said Stacey Zucker, Associate Director, Support Services. “To complete the projects and implement the decisions of the Accommodation Reviews, we are implementing plans to ease the transition of staff, students and families impacted by the 13 projects.”

Once a project receives funding from the Ministry of Education, plans are initiated for construction. Each project must be designed, receive regulatory approvals and permits, and be tendered within budget. The process can take upwards of 18 months. If the new project is a result of a consolidation or growth, then planning is needed to support the transitions associated with school closures, boundary reviews, and naming of new schools.

The planning work done by HWDSB will see the following in the 2018-19 school year:

Schools Closing in June 2019 Schools to be Named Transition Committees
·         Delta Secondary School

·         Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School

·         Beverly Central Elementary School

·         Queen’s Rangers Elementary School

·         CH Bray Elementary School

·         Fessenden Elementary School

“We believe that communication with students and families is a priority as we pursue the successful completion of school reorganization and construction projects,” said Zucker. “Even though we recognize the temporary inconvenience this may cause families, we are confident that these transitions will result in permanent solutions to maximize student accommodation.”
