HWDSB Offers Math Supports to Parents

As part of Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board’s Renewed Math Strategy, the Board has created online Math resources designed to help parents understand what their children are learning, how they are learning it, and why it is important for them to learn this way.

The resources, found at www.hwdsb.on.ca/mathhelp, offer parents the ability to support their child at home. The online resources include:

  • Highlights of student learning in Math for grades 1-8 through the Ontario Curriculum
  • Examples of Math lessons in a classroom to share with parents
  • Videos to watch students talk about why they are learning Math this way
  • Links to supports that will help parents help their child at home
  • An explanation of HWDSB’s Renewed Math Strategy

“We know that Math is a critical requirement for the jobs of today and tomorrow,” said Director of Education, Manny Figueiredo. “A child in Junior Kindergarten today will graduate high school in the year 2032 and it is our job to help prepare them for a future that we can’t envision yet.”

A key focus for HWDSB has been to align Math instruction with one of the Board’s Strategic Direction priorities, Student Learning and Achievement. This priority area sets targets for students, staff and the system to have at least 65 per cent of students achieving at or above provincial standard as measured by the Education Quality Accountability Office (EQAO).

“Our Renewed Math Strategy focuses on working together with our students, parents and educators toward the shared goal of student success,” continued Figueiredo. “By providing resources to families to help their child at home, we can all ensure that students make progress each year, reaching closer to graduation and being prepared to build a strong future for themselves.”
