A new education and employment program run by Centre[3] — a charitable not-for-profit, artist-run centre — aims to help youth find meaningful employment.

Filomena Tassi — member of Parliament for Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas — visited the centre’s new studio facilities earlier this month

The programs — Centre[3]’s NuSteel and 360[4]Youth — will provide both hard and soft skills training for youth from ages 15 to 30 to help them find and retain employment.

Filomena Tassi — member of Parliament for Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas — visited the centre’s new studio facilities earlier this month.

Besides the visit to the new location at 29 Harriet St. Tassi, who is also the minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for southern Ontario, received an update on how the programs are doing.

“It was a pleasure to see artistic work happening. We also continued our important conversation to identify and meet the growing needs of Hamilton’s youth and the creative industries.” said Tassi in a release.

New Ward 11 councillor, a retired principal, wants answers on the Greenbelt and more crossing guards

Mark Tadeson wants to focus on updating local infrastructure and a new arena.

The new councillor representing Ward 11, a retired principal with 29 years of experience in education, says the city needs more crossing guards and better infrastructure.

Mark Tadeson, Ward 11 Councilor

Mark Tadeson, 57, says he’s focused on improving the ward’s roadways, protecting Hamilton Greenbelt spaces and building a new elementary school in Binbrook.

“The big thing for me is that our infrastructure hasn’t kept up with our growth,” said Tadeson. “I just want to look at those things to see if we can make some improvements and enhancements in our roads that lead to our communities.”

Tadeson was officially sworn in Nov. 16, 2022 as city councillor of ward 11, home of Lake Niapenco, the Binbrook Conservation Area and the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

Thursday night, he’ll host Mayor Andrea Horwath’s New Year’s Levee celebration in Glanbrook to recognize outstanding volunteers in the community.

He has worked in both the Halton and Hamilton Wentworth District School Boards (HWDSB) and is now working with his fellow councilors and school board trustees to address issues that the boards currently face.

Tadeson said he’ll leave running school boards to trustees and executive counsels, but says his experience as an educator might help smooth processes along. He’ll sit on the HWDSB Liaison sub-committee and the school boards property sub-committee.

He says “we need more crossing guards city-wide. I am also fielding issues around the school bus delays.”

Members of the school’s debating team and a Grade 10 civics class joined Ward 10 Coun. Jeff Beattie for a Jan. 12 guided tour that included a new media centre and council chambers, where they were given a briefing on how local government works.

After trudging past councillors’ offices, meeting Tammy Hwang, Craig Cassar, Brad Clark and Mark Tadeson along the way, the 15 students convened for a question-and-answer session in a committee room.

Grade 10 student Ziad Ansari led off by raising concerns about the sale of vaping products to underage kids.

“The lowest grade I’ve probably seen people vaping is probably Grade 6 or Grade 5 and I don’t like how they’re almost been marketed as a healthy cigarette,” he said. “I don’t want to see a future generation of people sick.”
