Honouring Transgender Day of Remembrance
Dear HWDSB Students, Staff, Families and Community,
Today as we observe and honour Transgender Day of Remembrance, I urge all of us to collectively reflect on the importance of this day and its significance for the communities HWDSB proudly serves.
Transgender Day of Remembrance is a time to honour and remember the lives lost to anti-transgender violence, and to stand in solidarity with transgender individuals, their families and communities. It is a day of reflection, mourning, and of commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive system for all students, staff and families.
While we take this day to remember the lives lost, it is also an opportunity to reaffirm HWDSB’s commitment to providing a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment for transgender students, staff, and families.
HWDSB takes its responsibility to teach and build an inclusive education system, extremely seriously. Modelling and actively advocate for kindness, respect, and dignity for everyone is our top priority.
Hamilton is a strong and connected community, and we all play an important role in upholding and fostering a world where every person feels safe, valued, and seen.
As we acknowledge and observe Transgender Day of Remembrance, let’s also reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where everyone can live authentically without fear of discrimination or violence.
In an act of solidarity and remembrance, flags at HWDSB’s Education Centre will be flown at half-mast today.
With care and kindness,
Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
