National Day of Mourning – April 28

day of mourningToday is the National Day of Mourning, a day that we remember workers who have died, been injured, or fallen ill from their jobs, and commit to protecting workers and preventing further workplace tragedies.

National Day of Mourning was first declared by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984 and is now recognized around the world. We acknowledge this somber day by flying flags at HWDSB at half-mast.

At HWDSB, we stand with the family members and friends of those who have been touched by workplace tragedies. We will continue to support survivors, labour groups, families, and community partners as they advocate for workplace safety.

We continue to make the health and safety of students and staff a top priority. It is a shared commitment by the Board of Trustees, Executive Council, management, unions, health and safety committees, and staff. We all play a role in positively contributing to safety on all properties and in all buildings, as is outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Policy.

On this National Day of Mourning, let us honour everyone who has been touched by workplace tragedy or workplace incidents. Let us all help ensure that all students and staff safely return home at the end of the day.

Sincerely,

Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
Director of Education
