The Carlisle Retirement Residence has been working with the local community to commemorate Remembrance Day. Called “The Poppy Project,” The Carlisle handed out a 1,000 large poppies specially designed to enable kids and adults alike to write personal messages addressed to Veterans on the back of the poppy.

The Leadership Team got up bright and early to “plant” the 1,000 or so poppies. The poppies are dramatically displayed on the front lawn of the residence at 467 Main St. East until 5pm today.

“We are thrilled to work with local schools and organizations to honour our beloved Veterans. We love that community members can write their own personal message to those who have served our country,” states The Carlisle’s General Manager, Richard Glass.

The fact that we can involve our youth on an individual basis is very special. Some of the youth were here to celebrate with the seniors over “Hot Chocolate and Cookies” from 9 to 11 am,” continues Richard.

We held our own Memorial Service at 10:45 am. Major Brian Sloas of the Salvation Army presided over our service with Residents also contributing. Events in the service include: lowering of the Canada Flag, reading of “In Flanders Field” by Resident Cornelia Grenier and readings of the Scripture. We also honoured our sole WWII Veteran Gord Campbell.

The schools actively participating in “The Poppy Project” are: Cathedral Catholic High School, Cathy Wever Elementary School, Dr. J.E. Elementary School and Central Elementary School.

Major Sloan concludes, “It is so wonderful to have the kids and the seniors together honouring this special day, and the incredible men and women who served to protect our country. Lest we forget.”
