International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia – May 17

IDA homophobia transphobia biphoboia graphicOn Wednesday, May 17, HWDSB recognizes the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

The intention of the date is to raise awareness about the human rights of individuals with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. Sadly, Two Spirit and LGBTIQIA+ people and communities around the world continue to see a rise of targeted harassment, violence, and acts of hate. As such, any act of homophobia, transphobia, or biphobia in schools and workplaces must be challenged as unacceptable behaviour.

At HWDSB, we aim to affirm all diverse and distinct identities. In doing so, we strive to create safer and more inclusive learning and working environments where everyone can be free of harassment and hate.

Students, families, staff, and local communities continue to collaborate with Equity, Mental Health, Safe Schools, Human Rights, and other HWDSB departments to bring about more awareness, support, and change.

Our collective work to support an inclusive culture in schools and workplaces starts with listening and valuing voices currently and historically underserved. This means we create space to uplift, trust, and value the lived experiences of those who identify as being a part of Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities and have been the most impacted by the inequities they face because of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia.

We continue to hear from students and families that not everyone in local communities and schools feel safe as we continue to see a rise in incidents of hate, bias, and prejudice in Canada and globally. It is our responsibility and obligation to interrupt behaviours or actions that intentionally or unintentionally harm others. On International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we take these steps in the pursuit of well-being and belonging for all.

Today, and every day, we remain committed to making all schools and workplaces free of homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia. We will continue to encourage kindness, inclusivity, and safety for all.

We look forward to continuing our awareness about the human rights of Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities as we celebrate Pride Month in June.

Sincerely,

Paul Denomme
Superintendent, Equity and Safe Schools
