Young Artists of Hamilton Benefit Gala Makes Student Dreams a Reality

www.hwdsb.on.ca foundation files 2015 09 Gala Poster.pdfThe Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) Foundation is excited to announce the second annual Young Artists of Hamilton Benefit Gala, featuring Juno award-winner Steve Strongman and special guests including Tomi Swick.

This event provides the extra funding necessary to support disadvantaged and at-risk students so that they have the opportunity to interact, enjoy and learn from many different mediums and experiential learning opportunities in dance, drama, media arts, music, and visual art programs.

“Education in the Arts is essential to students’ intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth and well-being,” said HWDSB Arts Consultant Karen Wilkins. “Thanks to the Foundation, HWDSB students have more access to Arts opportunities for experiential learning, specialized materials and working with community professionals.”

At the gala at LIUNA Station on Dec. 1, guests will enjoy a four-course meal with student entertainment, “mystery” guests, raffles, silent auction, photo booth and a live feed featuring coverage of the event. Organizers promise a fantastic event at an outstanding local venue, where guests can support the Foundation and Hamilton students in need.

Tickets are $125 per person ($50 tax receipt) or $1,000 per table of eight. With over 300 guests in its first year and limited seating, the gala is likely to sell out so organizers urge those interested to buy tickets as soon as possible.

Part of the proceeds will support the NuSteel program at Centre [3], an HWDSB alternative education program that lets students learn in a non-traditional setting where the studio is the classroom. Students learn multiple subjects through arts-based problem solving and the creative use of digital and traditional art forms.

NuSteel teacher Michelle Gibson believes that the program “is a game-changer in terms of modelling what alternative education can be. The partnership between the HWDSB and Centre[3] has resulted in a program in which student interests shape their educational experience. We are a small-scale model of exactly the kind of place that kids want to be.”
