Waterdown District High School graduate Mackenzie Boers received the University of Guelph-Humber Founders’ Academic Merit Scholarship April 11 at the Parkside Drive school. The scholarship has a $20,000 value.

Boers, who is currently taking a gap year, plans to study media studies at UGH in the fall.

The 18 year old found out she was receiving it when the Guelph-Humber representatives walked into the WDHS library with the cheque.

“It was very exciting,” she said. “It was really surprising.”

The award, which is paid out in $5,000 installments over four years, recognizes academic achievement, leadership skills and extracurricular involvement.

Boers, currently working as a communications assistant in Ward 15 Councillor Judi Partridge’s office, said she took part in many extracurricular activities at WDHS.

She started the school’s student newspaper, the WDHS Chronicles, in Grade 11, as the result of a media studies class. She also took part in the school’s yearbook and prom committees and the SOLID club.

While she said she’s not sure what career she wants to pursue, she enjoys both photography and journalism.

She said she’s very excited to have received the award.

“It takes a lot of pressure off,” she laughed. “I’m looking forward to going to school.”
