Joint Statement from HWDSB Director Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini and Chair Dawn Danko Regarding Potential Protests at Education Centre
Tomorrow some protestors plan to gather in front of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Education Centre. Based on information available, the protest and potential walk out at schools seeks to challenge policies and supports in schools which uphold the human rights of individuals with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is committed to upholding the human rights of all those we serve.
We recognize that the prospect of this protest has been harmful for many HWDSB students, families, staff and communities, especially those who are members of the Two Spirit LGBTQIA+ communities.
HWDSB remains unwavering in our commitment to support and uphold the human rights of transgender, non-binary, gender diverse and all Two Spirit LGBTQIA+ students, staff, families and community members. HWDSB actively rejects transphobia, homophobia, biphobia, as well as any form of discrimination based on one’s gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation.
While we respect the right to freedom of expression, we do not support targeted protests against specific communities. Hate has no home at HWDSB.
HWDSB’s commitment to providing learning and working environments that are safer, more inclusive, respectful, accessible, and free from discrimination and harassment for all remains unchanged.
As we continue to navigate these challenging times, know that we stand firmly in our commitments. To our students, families, staff and communities who identify as Two Spirit LGBTQIA+, we see you, we support you, and you belong here.
In solidarity,
Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
