Sir Isaac Brock Holds a Mental Well-Being Play Day
What does a dragon do to stay mentally well? At Sir Isaac Brock elementary, the dragons did yoga, drumming, mandala colouring and more.
Those are some of the activities that the Healthy Dragons – the School Health Action Team at Sir Isaac Brock elementary – organized and ran at the school’s first play day focused on mental wellness.
The school’s ME (mental) WE (wellness) Play Day in June explored the five ways to mental well-being: Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Be Creative and Play, and Keep Learning.
It involved a yoga station (take notice), a drumming station (keep learning), co-operative games (connect), mandala colouring station and decorative banner station (be creative and play), and several running and tag games (be active).
This was different than any other play day the school has had in the past. The innovation arose after students made suggestions in a survey about what they wanted the Healthy Dragons to focus on.
The Healthy Dragons made announcements on the PA system for days leading up to the event to make sure all students had a good understanding of the five ways to mental well-being. Staff call the event a “great success” and hope it will inspire students to use these five ways to help promote mental well-being for themselves and those around them.
