National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Dear HWDSB students, families and community,

On December 6th, we come together to observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

This solemn day marks the anniversary of the tragic Montreal Massacre in 1989, when 14 young women were killed simply because of their gender. Their lives were cut short by an act of hatred and violence that has left an indelible mark on our society.

As we reflect on this tragedy, we also take this moment to remember all the women who have experienced violence and to recognize the ongoing challenges they face. This day is not just about remembering the victims but also about committing ourselves to action, raising awareness, and working together to create a world where everyone, regardless of their gender, is treated with respect, dignity, and compassion.

At HWDSB, we are dedicated to fostering environments that are safe, inclusive, and reflect our values – dignity, compassion, trust and joy. It is essential that we continue to educate ourselves about the realities of gender-based violence and the importance of supporting survivors.  In our classrooms and workspaces, we seek to challenge harmful attitudes, break cycles of violence, and empower individuals to speak out and seek help.

As your Director of Education, I want to emphasize that the fight against gender-based violence must also confront the compounded inequalities that exist due to race, socioeconomic status, and other intersecting identities. We know that women of color, Indigenous women, and those from marginalized communities experience unique and disproportionate rates of violence. Racism, colonialism, and systemic discrimination can create barriers to safety, justice, and support. It is crucial that we recognize how these factors intensify the experiences of violence for many women.

As we honour victims of gender-based violence, we must also recognize the responsibility we have to combat the inequalities that fuel such violence. This is not just a women’s issue; it is a human rights issue. We must continue to listen to and amplify the voices of women.

At HWDSB, we will be reflecting on how we can contribute to a society free from violence. Whether through education, raising awareness, supporting survivors, or advocating for change, every action counts. To acknowledge this commitment and to honour this day, flags at HWDSB will be flown at half-mast system wide.

Let us stand together in solidarity, remembering the lives lost and commit to making a positive difference for the future.

Sincerely,

Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini

Director of Education
