Mohawk Trail Welcomes about 1,000 for Doors Open Hamilton

The weekend of May 7-8 was a busy time for the 1882 one-room Mohawk Trail School Museum tucked into the rear yard of the new HWDSB Education Centre.

Like a property on a renovation TV, the building was finally opened at its new site to a crowd of about 1,000 for Doors Open Hamilton. It came after a packed ribbon-cutting May 6 attended by Board staff.

Archives volunteer Linda Sargeant noted the weekend heard stories and questions from many guests, including two gentlemen in their 90s who attended the school in the 1930’s. There are plans brewing that may include a Mohawk Trail School Reunion, or a gathering of teachers from one-room schoolhouses, she explained.

Volunteers are also planning the programming that will be run out of the renovated schoolhouse, with the expectation that school visits may begin later this year. The opening and ribbon-cutting were both tributes to John Aikman, the long-time HWDSB Archives manager now struggling with health challenges.
