Letter for students going to Viola Desmond

Please see the following letter for families of Elizabeth Bagshaw and Sir Wilfrid Laurier students from our school who will be attending the new Viola Desmond Elementary School on the Glen site in September 2021.

SWL EB Letter to Zones 3 and 4 letterhead final

May 7, 2021

Dear families at Elizabeth Bagshaw (Zone 4) and Sir Wilfrid Laurier (Zone 3),

On June 19, 2017, the Ministry of Education announced funding for a new $15.5 million, 682 pupil Kindergarten to Grade 8 school scheduled to open September 2021.

As part of the East Hamilton City Accommodation Review, the Board of Trustees approved the closure of Glen Echo, Glen Brae, Sir Isaac Brock, and Elizabeth Bagshaw.

The new K-8 school at the Glen site will accommodate all the students from Glen Echo, Glen Brae, and Sir Isaac Brock, as well as some students from Elizabeth Bagshaw (Zone 4) and Sir Wilfrid Laurier (Zone 3). (See map below.)

While we have been updating the community over the past few years, the final stages of the process are underway. Over the past several months, we have gathering input from the Transition Advisory Committee about the upcoming transition, and the Naming Advisory Committee put forth recommendations for a new name.

After a decision made by the Board of Trustees, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is proud to announce that the name of the new school will be Viola Desmond Elementary School. Due to the change in catchment areas, your child will move to this new school in September 2021.

A change like this can be exciting and stressful for students and their families. To support a smooth transition, staff are planning a variety of opportunities for students to build relationships with staff and students from other schools, get familiar with the new school, honour the closing of their current school, and celebrate the formation of a new school community.

Administration and staff from the different schools will work together, along with families, to support student learning and well-being.

The attached map provides a general overview of the changes to the boundaries. For more detailed information or questions about the upcoming transition, please contact your current principal.

  • Sir Wilfrid Laurier Elementary School: Mr. Moore, 905-578-4422

Sincerely,
