Labour Update – November 7
Labour Update to Families – Nov 7
November 7, 2022
Dear Families,
Today, the Government of Ontario committed to rescind Bill 28, Keeping Students in Class Act. As a result, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced an end to their protest.
We are pleased that CUPE members at HWDSB, which include caretaking and maintenance workers, will be back in schools tomorrow.
Schools will be open for students and in-person learning will resume tomorrow, Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Regular cleaning and disinfecting will resume throughout the day tomorrow by CUPE workers.
CUPE and the Government of Ontario will resume the collective bargaining process. We will keep you informed should there be further impacts due to labour negotiations.
All Child Care operating in HWDSB schools will be open tomorrow. This includes Early Learning and Child Care centres (Birth to age 3.8), EarlyON Child and Family Centres, all licensed before- and after-school programs, and all authorized recreation programs will be open.
All regular programming including Athletics and extra-curricular activities will resume this week. We will do our best to reschedule any cancellation as soon as possible.
Rentals and Community Use of Schools will resume the evening of Wednesday, November 9.
We look forward to welcoming our valued maintenance workers and caretakers back to HWDSB schools tomorrow. Together, we will all focus on supporting the in-person learning, mental health, and well-being of our students.
If you have any questions or require support, please contact your child/ren’s school.
Sincerely,
Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
Director of Education
