HWDSB Puts Itself in the Hands of its Students for New Branding

Dozens of students will work in teams like miniature ad agencies at a creative arts facility to help Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board develop a new tagline to replace “All Students Achieving Their Full Potential.”

Revising the tagline – found on hundreds of websites, documents and publications – is part of the sweeping review of HWDSB’s vision and focus that the Board of Trustees launched soon after being elected.

“We are entering a new era at HWDSB with a vision that embraces change, innovation and community contribution,” Board Chair Todd White said. “We want the voice of our students to be our new identity so that our vision resonates with the people who matter most.”

HWDSB middle and high school students will visit the Cotton Factory (270 Sherman Ave. N.) at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2016 for a day-long session using physical and digital tools to develop the tagline. Top suggestions will go to Student Senate and Governance Committee on the way to final Trustee approval of a winning choice.

The event is the next step as HWDSB prepares to launch a new four-year vision that focuses on students and incorporates community input. The new vision matters because it provides the structure for HWDSB to align its annual operating plan and its Budget priorities.

The Reimagine HWDSB campaign has three stages: Explore, Imagine and Launch. In the first stage, the Board heard from hundreds of respondents and generated a 46-page report on initial public feedback. The second stage invited public to review and refine the new vision.

In February, Trustees approved a Strategic Directions Plan with a new mission, commitment statement and new priorities. The new mission is: “We empower students to learn and grow to their full potential in a diverse world.” The new commitment statement is: “We are committed to learning, equity, engagement and innovation.” The five new priorities are: Student Learning and Achievement; Positive Culture and Well-Being; Effective Communication; School Renewal; and Partnerships.

The final stage of the Reimagine campaign – Launch – will occur in time for the start of the 2016-17 school year.
