HWDSB and OCTU Reach Local Agreement

Hamilton, Ontario – July 14, 2020: Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is pleased to jointly announce a local agreement with the Office and Technical Workers Unit (OCTU) of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF).

At HWDSB, OCTU represents 499 permanent and casual school- and board-based office, clerical and technical employees. HWDSB’s Board of Trustees approved the tentative local agreement at a Board meeting on July 13, 2020. OCTU members ratified the agreement on July 10, 2020.

“This agreement is another positive milestone for HWDSB after months of respectful negotiation, and because we know that OCTU members provide high-value and deeply caring services for our students, fellow staff and families,” said Alex Johnstone, Chair of the Board at HWDSB.

The agreement covers the period from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2022. As part of the agreement, the Board will receive annual Support for Students funding for two years. This funding will create school-based education worker positions to provide supports for students, address special education, unique learning needs, as well as mental health initiatives.

“On behalf of our membership and the bargaining committee, I would like to thank all parties involved in reaching this agreement,” said Samantha Wilson, District 21 Office Clerical Technical Unit President.

“Our members are the frontline and backbone education workers who remain committed to providing the best possible supports to the students, staff, and community members of HWDSB,” Wilson added.  “The completion of the bargaining process allows our members to breathe a little easier as we navigate together with HWDSB into the future of supporting our students and families in the upcoming school year.”
