HWDSB and CUPE reach tentative local agreement

Hamilton, Ontario – May 9, 2023: Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 4153, which includes custodial and maintenance workers, are pleased to have reached a tentative local agreement.


“CUPE members are highly valued in HWDSB who keep our schools and workspaces clean and well-maintained. They preform essential caretaking and maintenance functions that support students, staff and community members each day. Trustees are pleased to approve a tentative local deal that will now be presented to member of CUPE 4153 for ratification. We’re proud that an agreement was reached, which represents the hard work and collaboration from all parties.”

“Local 4153 appreciates the confidence and support of the Trustees and in the HWDSB Human Resources Team as they have worked with us through the contract bargaining process.  We are happy to hear that Trustees have approved our tentative agreement and our Local Bargaining Team looks forward to presenting the tentative agreement to our members on Saturday for their approval.”

  • The Collective Agreement settlement reached is for the period of September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2026 and amended as per the School Boards Collective Bargaining Act.
  • CUPE represents approximately 500 employees in HWDSB.
  • As a result of the local agreement, the Board is in receipt of the investment in Support for Students Fund negotiated at the central table.
