HWDSB and COPE Reach Local Agreement

Hamilton, Ontario – September 25, 2020: Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is pleased to jointly announce a local agreement with the Canadian Office & Professional Employees Union (COPE Local 527). COPE 527 represents over 950 HWDSB Educational Assistants, Child and Youth Care Practitioners and Communication Disorders Assistants.

HWDSB’s Board of Trustees approved the local agreement at a Board meeting on August 31, 2020. COPE Local 257 members ratified the agreement on September 23, 2020.

“Reaching this agreement represents another positive step forward for the entire Board after a period of respectful negotiation conducted virtually,” said Alex Johnstone, Chair of the Board at HWDSB. “We extend our sincere thanks to members of COPE for continuing to provide high-value services for our students.”

The tentative agreement covers the period from September 1, 2019, to August 31, 2022.

“This agreement was reached after an intense summer of virtual bargaining,” said COPE Local 527 President, Susan Lucek. “There is much work ahead of us to ensure that our education workers are treated with respect, kept safe and valued on a daily basis.”
