HWDSB Acknowledges Human Rights Day
Dear Students, Families, and Community,
This week HWDSB paused to reflect on Human Rights Day, and the universal values that uphold the dignity of every human being from all backgrounds, nationalities, races, religions and lived experiences.
This year’s theme, “Our rights, our future, right now.” emphasises how human rights empower individuals and communities to build a better future.
This day reminds us that Human Rights are not just important ideas or occasional considerations. They are fundamental values that guide how we act, how we treat others, and are protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
At HWDSB, we are unwavering in our commitment to creating a culture of respect for human rights, equity, inclusion, and justice. It is essential that every student, family, and staff member feels valued, respected, and supported. To learn more about our Human Rights Policy click here.
Central to our Multi-Year Strategic Plan is a firm dedication to upholding Human Rights, Safety, and Well-Being for all members of the communities that HWDSB is proud to serve. This is intrinsically linked to HWDSB’s commitment to Reinforcing Indigenous Educational Wellness & Reconciliation, as it seeks to cultivate intergenerational healing and wellness in a restorative education system. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (the Declaration) is underpinned in the work of Truth and Reconciliation and in advancing reconciliatory education that is mutually beneficial for Indigenous Peoples and All Treaty Partners.
We recognize that when individuals feel safe, supported, and secure in their learning and workspaces, it not only fosters healthier communities but also leads to stronger, more positive outcomes for all students. You can click here to learn more about the commitment in our Human Rights Policy.
The quest for equality and justice is ongoing, and we are resolute in our mission to create learning and workspaces where everyone can experience HWDSB’s important values – dignity, compassion, trust, and joy.
As we honour Human Rights Day, let us renew our commitment to building a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
Today and always, the collaboration between HWDSB staff and community will help to educate ourselves and one another, champion the rights of all, and ensure that HWDSB remains a place of safety, opportunity, and joy for every student, staff member and family.
Sincerely,
Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini Yohana Otite
