Hess Street School’s Music Program Receives $11,000 Grant

Hess Street School’s music program is the recipient of $11,000 after successfully applying to MusiCounts / The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) Band Aid Program.

The grant funding will be used to purchase new musical instruments and equipment integral to the growth and successful execution of the music program at Hess.

Denise Montgomery, music teacher at Hess, applied for the grant after she saw a rise in the number of students who had an interest in playing instruments.

Montgomery remembers a specific time after attending a Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra concert, when one grade 8 student returned to school inspired to learn the French horn and pursue a career in music. Montgomery was able to borrow a French horn from a fellow music teacher for the student to practice with, but she knew that having one in their own inventory would provide more opportunities for future students.

Montgomery highlights the importance of having these instruments available in the school, “The school music program provides the only opportunity for most Hess Street students to learn to play an instrument. It makes learning more fun, and shows that music is an important part of their education.”

In an effort to promote the love of music and learning, Hess’ Music Program has recently partnered with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) to have musicians mentor students, build literacy skills through music, and provide opportunities for students to see concerts.

“For some students, music class is the highlight of their day, and when playing on instruments that are in good working condition, it enhances their experience and promotes a commitment to learning,” explains Montgomery.

Montgomery is confident that new instruments will inspire students further in the instrumental and band programs, while promoting the Arts at Hess Street School.
