Extracurriculars and Clubs in schools

HWDSB recognizes that students can benefit when they participate in school sports and/or other extracurriculars, and activities. Participation can lead to a boost in their physical and mental health.

Beginning the week of January 31, 2022, school staff may resume extra-curricular activities, with a few exceptions based on public health guidance.

What can start with public health measures:

  • Low-contact sports (volleyball, badminton, running, etc.) as intra-murals or team practices
  • Clubs (Environmental club, yearbook committee, photography club, etc.)
  • Student groups (Positive Space, Student Senate, etc.)
  • Other activities (Art, some intra-mural activities, Winter Olympics games, etc.)

Students should be masked during these activities and distancing maintained to the greatest extent possible. Cohorting should occur whenever possible.

OPHEA guidelines also need to be followed for low contact sports and other physical activities.

What is paused until further notice:

The following extra-curricular activities continue to be paused:

  • Choirs
  • Bands
  • High-contact sports (e.g., Basketball, Hockey, etc.)

More information about these paused activities will be shared once we receive direction from the Ministry of Education.
