Chair Alex Johnstone and Vice-Chair Dawn Danko Acclaimed

Hamilton, Ontario – December 2, 2019: At the Initial Board Meeting in December, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) Trustees acclaimed Wards 11 and 12 Trustee Alex Johnstone as Chair of the Board and Ward 7 Trustee Dawn Danko as Vice-Chair of the Board. Both Johnstone and Danko return in their leadership roles for the second consecutive year.

“As we enter into the second year of our term, our Board’s number one priority is the Safe Schools: Bullying Prevention and Intervention Review Panel,” said Chair Johnstone. “Trustees share the concerns and the strong desire from our communities to ensure the best policies, practices and community networks are in place so that no student faces bullying alone.

The Panel will conduct citywide consultations where all students, parents, staff and community partners will be invited to take part. Johnstone was reminded of the expression when reflecting on the intended consultation outcome: “It takes a community to raise a child and, in this case, an entire city.”

“In addition, the Board of Trustees will focus on continuing to maintain respectful labour negotiations locally, be a strong voice provincially for preserving class sizes, complete the transportation bell time study to effectively resolve the bus driver shortage, focus on revitalizing our schools, and improve gains made in the area of student learning and achievement,” said Johnstone.

During the Initial Board meeting, Trustees elected their fellow Trustees into the following positions:

  • Chair of the Policy Committee – Elected Trustee Cam Galindo (Wards 9 & 10)
  • Chair of the Program Committee – Elected Trustee Becky Buck (Wards 8 & 14)
  • Chair of the Governance Committee – Elected Trustee Paul Tut (Ward 13)
  • Chair of the Finance and Facilities Committee – Re-Elected Trustee Dawn Danko (Ward 7)
  • Chair of the Human Resources Committee – Re-Elected Trustee Penny Deathe (Ward 15)
