Ancaster High Graduate Wins Award for Excellence in Welding
One of HWDSB’s own was recently recognized for her pursuit of a career in welding. Alexandria (Alex) Gawhary discovered her passion for the trade during her time at Ancaster High Secondary School. She accomplished many feats over her four years and is still achieving success at the post-secondary level.
The CWB Welding Foundation’s Joseph G. Doria Exemplary Student Award encourages students to explore the field of welding. According to the organization, the award supports a, “graduating Canadian secondary school student who is entering a full-time welding technician or welding engineering technology program.”

Alexandria (Alex) Gawhary.
Alex’s family members helped spark her interest in the trades at a young age. She remembers watching her uncles work on a variety of projects from her grandma’s window. Her family has been supportive of Alex since day one and they have a lot to be proud of. She was an honour roll student from Grades 10-12 and swam competitively for many years.
Alex began taking welding classes in high school, where she was the only female student in her trade-based programs. Her excellent work was rewarded when she was one of two students chosen to represent HWDSB at a welding competition. Alex was the lone female participant and placed fourth in the district.
When asked about her time at Ancaster, Alex said, “I am thankful to my shop teachers who supported and encouraged me to go after my dreams. I believe in myself.” Her confidence in her abilities has allowed her to turn this dream into a reality.
After completing two co-op placements at The Iron Workers Union 736 and Walters Incorporated, Alex chose to further her education by enrolling at Conestoga College. Her goal is to become a Boilermaker after she masters her craft in the Welding Techniques program.
Congratulations to Alex on her Joseph G. Doria Exemplary Student Award! Welding is an amazing skill to possess and the profession will be lucky to have you.
