Director’s Statement on Israel and Palestine

Dear HWDSB families,

HWDSB is deeply saddened to hear of the weekend’s deadly attacks and ongoing violence in Israel and Palestine. Our thoughts and condolences go out to all people affected by the ongoing violence. We acknowledge this is a particularly devastating time for HWDSB students, staff and families who are connected to the region.

As students return to HWDSB classrooms today, we want to stress our ongoing commitment to upholding human rights for all and creating an environment that is safe, inclusive, and respectful for all HWDSB students, staff and families.

World events can be disturbing and difficult to understand. It is OK to have different emotions about the events students are seeing and hearing about. Please refer to the How to Support Students During World Conflicts Tip Sheet created by our Social Work Services team about supporting children and youth during tragic events.

At HWDSB, we do not stand with hate, intolerance, or violence of any kind.

Today – and always – we look for hope and walk united towards peace.

In solemn support,

Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
Director of Education – HWDSB
