Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching

Have you experienced a teacher who makes history come alive within the classroom?

Consider nominating them for the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching.  

Annually, Canada’s History Society acknowledges six teachers that demonstrate innovative and engaging techniques to educate on Canadian history. The 2023 recipients will be awarded:

  • A medal
  • An individual cash prize of $2,500
  • A $1000 cash prize for their school
  • A trip for two to Ottawa to attend the awards ceremony and related celebrations (subject to public health regulations)

Eligibility

The society welcomes submissions from elementary, middle and senior school classroom teachers. Teachers can submit a project, a body of work, or a group or school-wide initiative. 

Entrants must: 

  • be residents of Canada
  • work directly with students in a school setting
  • teach grades ranging from K–12 during the current school year
  • teach units or full courses that include a significant component of Canadian history at any grade level

About the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching

Today’s history students are increasingly engaged in their learning — through digital initiatives, community partnerships, intergenerational projects, or exploring Indigenous perspectives and experiences. At the heart of this work, there is a dedicated teacher who is passionate about making history meaningful and relevant to students.

Each year, the award honours six teachers for innovative approaches to teaching Canadian history. Teachers receive a cash prize of $2500 and an additional $1000 for their school. Don’t delay — thank a teacher in your community by nominating them today!
