Day of Mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

HWDSB will mark September 19, 2022, as a provincial Day of Mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Organizations across Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and the world continue to fly flags at half-mast to show our respects.

According to Ministry of Education direction, staff and students may observe a moment of silent reflection in honour of Her Majesty’s legacy of service to the people of Canada and across the Commonwealth on, or around, 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 19, 2022.

HWDSB recognizes the complicated history of the monarchy and that everyone’s individual experiences and emotions surrounding the Queen’s passing is different.

Staff are mindful of how conversations surrounding her death may affect students. Any observances or discussions in class will be age-appropriate to recognize the developmental stages of students and varied ways this event will affect diverse populations in our communities.

For some, the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II may bring up many questions for our students about life, death and grieving. We encourage you to communicate and connect with one another. This resource offers tips about how to support children and youth.
