Orchard Park’s SSHOPSS has Heart

At Orchard Park, there’s a group with a big name and a big heart.

SSHOPSS (Students and Staff Helping Orchard Park Students and Society) has been contributing to the school and community with annual initiatives addressing poverty. The group recently wrapped up its Christmas drive.

“I have been doing these initiatives for about 15 years and this year has been another amazing experience,” said Julie Boudreau, guidance counsellor and SSHOPSS advisor. “The students organize and complete all the promotion, shopping and various tasks to help others that they will never know or meet.”

This year’s campaign included fundraising that allowed SSHOPSS to buy gifts for OP students in need. They provided gifts and treats for OP’s Developmentally Delayed and Comprehensive classes, thanks to donors like The Winona Men’s Club, Tim Hortons, Memorial (SC) Elementary School, as well as OP students and staff.

In turn, the DD class helped OP support the new McMaster Children’s Toy Drive. They wrapped the donation boxes and set up the tree in the main office to create a place to put the toy donations.

As the club counted its tally, they soon realized that they had more than 300 items. They delivered the final tally of 370 toys to McMaster on Monday, Dec. 19.
