Tiffany Hills Elementary School Selected as the Name for the New Elementary School in Ancaster
Tiffany Hills Elementary School is the name for the new elementary school being built at 255 Raymond Rd., on Hamilton’s west mountain in Ancaster. Trustees made the decision at their Board meeting on Monday, April 25, 2016. Tiffany Hills Elementary School is expected to open in the 2016-2017 school year.
The Tiffany name has a long history in Ancaster, as the Tiffany family was prominent in the community in the late 1800’s. George was a lawyer, Oliver was a physician, and Sylvester and Gideon were the publishers of the Upper Canada Gazette from 1794 to 1798 and the Canada Constellation, the first independent newspaper in Upper Canada, from 1799 to 1800. George Tiffany participated in the community in several capacities. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment of Gore Militia 13 December 1838. In 1843 he was a member of the board of examiners appointed by Hamilton’s board of police to find suitable teachers and temporary schoolhouses in the town’s five common school districts. Tiffany served as mayor of Hamilton in 1848. One of Ancaster’s local landmarks, Tiffany Falls, is located on what was once Oliver Tiffany’s property.
Three names were suggested to Trustees by a school naming advisory committee in Ancaster. The suggested names were Chris Hadfield Elementary School, Karen Kain Elementary School, and Tiffany Hills Elementary School.
The committee reviewed the 749 submitted names and selected the three to present to Trustees based on the Board’s policy as well as suggested criteria from the school naming advisory committee.
The 50,000 square foot schools is designed to accommodate 546 students with the ability to support the community’s development. In addition to classroom space, the school includes a gymnasium with change rooms, supporting space for student collaboration and a day care facility.
