Waterdown defeats Sherwood for Division-I boys hockey title

The Waterdown Warriors captured the Hamilton public secondary school Division-I Boys hockey title on Feb. 18 topping the Sherwood Saints 5-2 at Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena.

The victory marked the fourth time the Warriors have won the boys hockey title, having previously earned the league championship in 1998-99, 2002-03 and 2006-07.

Shane Hanley and Zachary Osborne each had a goal and an assist in the win for the Warriors with Logan McCarles notching the game winner late in the second period.  Hanley and Osborne collected their assists on the game winner.

Waterdown’s Christian Golfetto got the game scoring underway quickly netting the opening goal at 1:15 of the first period.  Matthew Oosterveld got the fifth goal for the Warriors putting the game out of reach with just three minutes to play.

Sherwood’s goal scorers were Zachary Daley and Austin Jensen.  Saints forward Jordan Stock notched two assists on the goals to finish with two points in the loss.

For Sherwood it marked the third straight season they have lost in the championship game having dropped two heartbreaking games to Saltfleet in the past two seasons.

Today’s game was a rematch of the 2011-12 championship where Sherwood bested Waterdown 3-1.

Up next, Waterdown advances to the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) semifinal game.
