ArtSMART Program

ArtSMART is a dynamic, hands-on full-semester theatre experience for HWDSB students, offering the opportunity to earn high school credits while participating in the production of a full-scale musical.


Course Highlights

Students from across HWDSB come together in Semester 2 to:

  • Work in a creative and supportive community
  • Gain real-world experience in Theatre Arts
  • Collaborate with local artists and industry professionals, including: Directors, Vocal Coaches, Stage Managers, Technical Designers, Choreographers, etc.

In conjunction with course work, participants will:

  • Perform on stage
  • Build sets, props, and costumes
  • Take on technical and stage crew roles

Students earn Four Credits:

  • Two Senior Academic Specialized Courses in Musical Theatre and Theatrical Production
  • Two Co-op Credits

These credits count toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and can fulfill SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) requirements.

Enrichment Opportunities:

  • Workshops such as SFX makeup, costuming, prop making, directing, lighting/sound, etc.
  • Field trips to professional theatre productions (eg. Mirvish, Stratford, Theatre Aquarius)
  • Final performances include elementary/middle school matinees and public evening shows

Program Location

Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School

Students from other HWDSB schools will attend Sir Allan MacNab for Semester 2. Transportation Accommodations Available.

Interested in theatre but not a performer? ArtSMART is now offering a 2 Credit Afternoon Co-Op for those exclusively interested in design/tech/production roles. Contact us at [email protected] for more information.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, students must:

  • Be a current HDWSB student
  • Be 15 years of age or older
  • Have successfully completed at least 8 credits

2025–2026 Application Details

To be accepted into the program, students must:

  1. Complete an Application Form
  2. Submit a Teacher Reference Form (to be completed by a recent HWDSB Teacher)
  3. Successfully complete an Audition

In-person audition dates will be posted throughout Semester 1.

Audition Requirement

Prepare the Following:

  • One Song to Sing (any genre – musical theatre songs encouraged)
  • One of the following Options:
  • Perform a Dance (any style/music)
  • Present a Monologue (memorization optional but encouraged)

Optional Additional Materials:

  • Headshot
  • Resume
  • Portfolio – samples related to technical/design/other artistic work
