Rowan’s Law: Concussion Safety

With the new school year underway, students are diving back into clubs and sports. Whether it’s intramural games, gym classes, or interschool sports, prioritizing concussion safety is essential. Taking proper precautions and recognizing the signs and symptoms of a concussion can help keep every student safe and healthy while they stay active.

To support student well-being, the Ontario Government continues to promote concussion awareness and injury prevention through Rowan’s Law, Ontario’s concussion safety legislation named in memory of Rowan Stringer, a 17-year-old athlete who tragically passed away in 2013 due to second impact syndrome. This condition, caused by the swelling of the brain from an injury that occurred before a previous injury healed, highlights the critical importance of recognizing and treating concussion symptoms. Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Law Day were created to honour Rowan’s memory and bring greater awareness for concussion safety among students, parents, educators and coaches.
