Remembrance Day 2023
Each year on November 11, HWDSB joins many Canadians in the recognition of Remembrance Day.
Today, Friday, November 10, flags will be lowered at school buildings and the Education Centre in commemoration of this solemn day. As Remembrance Day falls on a Saturday this year, HWDSB students and staff will mark this date on Friday, November 10.
Remembrance Day marks the end of the First World War in 1918, and traditionally involves a pause for silent reflection at the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month.
We are all the sum of our own experiences, and those experiences take on different meanings for each of us. Remembrance Day can lead to new questions and emotions about war, cause grief or worry over past or current events or be a reminder of hardships being faced. We encourage you to reflect on what Remembrance Day means to you, while also reflecting on what the date might mean to students, staff and families in the community.
Please see the links below to find Remembrance Day stories that you might be familiar with, and other stories of diverse Canadians that have gone untold in previous years. As many schools, classrooms and workplaces participate in learning and events related to the day, we hope these Remembrance Day resources help tell your stories.
Thank you for helping us mark Remembrance Day at HWDSB.
