National Day of Mourning – April 28, 2024

day of mourningSunday, April 28, 2024 is the National Day of Mourning. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of workplace safety and our shared responsibility to protect workers from harm. HWDSB solemnly remembers and honours the workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or fallen ill due to their work.

First declared by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984, the National Day of Mourning is now recognized worldwide. In observance of this day, flags at HWDSB are flown at half-mast.

At HWDSB, we stand in solidarity with the families and friends of those affected by workplace tragedies. With each tragedy, there are loved ones, family members, friends and co-workers who are deeply impacted. We remain committed to supporting survivors, labour groups, families, and community partners in their advocacy for safer workplaces.

The health and safety of our students and staff are paramount. This commitment is shared by the Board of Trustees, Executive Council, management, unions, health and safety committees, and all staff. Together, we strive to ensure safety on all our properties and in all buildings, as outlined in our Occupational Health and Safety Policy.

As we mark this National Day of Mourning, let us honor the memory of those who have been impacted by workplace incidents. We continue to strive to ensure that every student and staff member returns home safely at the end of each day.
