International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia

Dear HWDSB Community,

This Saturday, May 17th, we observe the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOTB). This day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to foster environments where every individual is celebrated for their gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation, and where they feel valued, respected, and safe.

At HWDSB, our commitment to equity and inclusion is embedded in our core values: Compassion, Dignity, Trust, and Joy. These principles guide our actions and decisions, ensuring that all students, staff, and families experience a sense of belonging and are supported in their identities.

Our Human Rights Policy underscores this commitment, affirming that all forms of discrimination and harassment are prohibited within our learning and working environments. We are dedicated to upholding the rights of all individuals, actively addressing systemic barriers, and promoting a culture of respect and inclusion.

Through initiatives like our Equity Action Plan and the Learn.Disrupt.Rebuild program, we continue to challenge and dismantle oppressive systems, striving to create spaces where every voice is heard and every person is empowered.

As we observe IDAHOT, let us reaffirm our dedication to human rights and equity. Together, we can build a community where love, acceptance, and respect are not just ideals but lived realities for all.

Sincerely,

Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
Director of Education
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board
