HWDSB Celebrates Earth Week 2023
Earth Day is an annual celebration on April 22 that aims to raise awareness and support for the need to protect the environment.
The day started in 1970 when US Senator Gaylord Nelson realized how much of earth’s most precious resources we were losing. Nelson brought together a group of like-minded people who organized the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, and encouraged people to participate in environmentally friendly activities such as picking up trash, planting trees or walking/biking to work.
Leading up to Earth Day, HWDSB’s Youth Climate Initiative organized Earth Week activities for schools to help support the environment. From April 14-21, HWDSB staff and students participated in initiatives including campus clean-ups, Earth Day trivia, ‘Green and Blue Day,’ and more.
See below for some of the best Earth Week 2023 moments from the HWDSB community.
Diamante Earth Day Poetry! Not being able to use sentences meant that students needed to choose powerful words to convey their messages. We brainstormed, we researched, and we discussed, but most of all we learned.
