Local Government Week: Empowering HWDSB Students Through Civic Education
This week, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, in collaboration with the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA), is proud to promote civic engagement among students by recognizing Local Government Week from October 20th – 24th.
School Board Trustees are Ontario’s longest-serving elected officials, with a proud history dating back to 1807. Today, Trustees continue that legacy by representing the voice of their communities in public education. They help set priorities, shape policies, and support the work of staff through the Director of Education — all in service of student achievement and well-being. Trustees also play an important role in ensuring school board budgets reflect the needs and values of the students, families, and communities they represent.
Did you know that at HWDSB, three student trustees are elected by the student body to represent their peers and bring the student voice to the board table? These student leaders are also part of the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association (OSTA-AECO), which represents over two million students across the province.
To mark Local Government Week, some of our schools are receiving visits from their local trustee to share knowledge about their roles and help students gain a better understanding of how local government works. Stay tuned on FB and IG for highlights of their visits.
