Black History Month

Dear HWDSB Community,

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the exceptional dedication and flexibility students, staff and families have shown during the recent cyber security incident that suspended access to routine HWDSB platforms, internet and Wi-Fi connectivity, followed by the closure of schools, learning and workspaces due to inclement weather.

We know that these disruptions presented challenges, and I deeply appreciate the patience, understanding and flexibility demonstrated by students, staff and families during these unanticipated circumstances.

We recognize that, during this period, we were unable to acknowledge or celebrate some of the important days of significance that are so deeply meaningful at HWDSB. These moments matter to us as a community, and we are committed to celebrating and honouring them.

The beginning of February marked the start of Black History Month, and – even if belatedly – I want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this month and the opportunity it provides to celebrate the incredible contributions, joy, and excellence of Black individuals, families, and communities. Black History Month allows us to honour the rich history, achievements, and resilience of Black people—both past and present—and to deepen our understanding of the vital role they play in shaping our shared world.

While we celebrate Black joy, brilliance, and accomplishments, it’s also important to acknowledge the difficult truths about the Black experience—both historically and in present day. From the legacy of enslavement and systemic racism to the ongoing struggles for equity and justice, the Black experience is marked by strength, resistance, and perseverance. As we celebrate, we must also reflect on the challenges and the ongoing work required to create a more inclusive, just, and compassionate society for all.

At HWDSB, we are privileged to be part of a community with students and families who bring a wealth of culture, history, and lived experience into our learning environments. Together, we share the responsibility to honour not just the achievements of the Black community, but also to engage with the full scope of its history—one that includes brilliance, immense strength, hope, and resilience.

Black History Month reminds us that our work toward equity is ongoing. As we continue to challenge misconceptions and amplify diverse perspectives, we help create a community where every individual feels valued, heard, and respected. Let us also remember that Black history is not just about the past, but an active and dynamic force shaping our present and future.

Let us use this month to reflect on the richness of Black history while also engaging with the truths that informs the realities of today.

Together, we can continue to build a community that values diversity, promotes compassion, and works toward a future of greater justice and equity for all.

While we acknowledge and honour the challenges of the past that still carry over into today, we also know there are so many Black students and staff who are demonstrating excellence in all they do academically, personally, professionally and for their communities. That is why, during this Black History Month, we look forward to highlighting Black students and staff members living a life of joy and excellence across HWDSB.

Wishing you all a meaningful, reflective, and joyful Black History Month.

Warm regards,

Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
