National School Bus Safety Week & Bus Driver Appreciation Day

graphic with bus for school bus safety weekEach year, during the third full week of October, we celebrate School Bus Safety Week and Bus Driver Appreciation Day. This week is a special time to acknowledge and commend the exceptional efforts of the dedicated school bus drivers of Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services (HWSTS).

From October 21 to 25, 2024, we emphasize the crucial role that school bus drivers play in guaranteeing safe transportation. On Wednesday, October 23, we observe School Bus Driver Appreciation Day.

We encourage families to express their gratitude to their bus drivers for their dedication to safely transporting students to and from school. A simple “Thank You” can significantly show support for their hard work and commitment, especially in these times of continued bus driver shortages.

More than 16,000 HWDSB students begin and end their school days with a ride on a school bus. Bus drivers’ kindness towards students is only surpassed by their unwavering commitment to ensuring safe journeys to and from school. It is clear that the professional school bus drivers of HWSTS shoulder a significant responsibility to keep students safe every day.

As a motorist, you play a crucial role in student safety.

RED FLASHING LIGHTS = NO PASSING
When you see a stopped bus with red flashing lights, remember to stop. This indicates that students may be crossing the road.

FLASHING OVERHEAD AMBER LIGHTS = BUS IS SLOWING DOWN
If you notice flashing amber lights, it means the bus is preparing to stop. Slow down, be ready to stop, and watch for students crossing the road.

We all share the responsibility of ensuring the roads are safe for school buses and the students who ride them. This week, please take a moment to express your gratitude to school bus drivers for the vital work they do!
