National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism – June 23, 2024
On Sunday, June 23, flags at Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) buildings will be lowered to half-mast for the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism. This day of mourning invites us to pause and consider the profound impacts of many historical heinous acts, both within Canada and beyond.
We specifically remember the tragic events of June 23, 1985 – the bombing of Air India Flight 182 – which claimed the lives of 329 people, many of whom were Canadian citizens. This event remains the largest mass killing in our nation’s history. It is the reason we mark the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences of violence.
As education providers, we strive to create safe, accessible and inclusive spaces where conflicts can be resolved through peaceful and proactive means. Our commitment extends to fostering belonging and empathy among students and staff, valuing diverse experiences and identities.
Together, we uphold human rights and kindness, ensuring that those affected by terrorism find solace, support and acceptance within HWDSB and broader communities.
Thank you for acknowledging the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism in hopes for a more compassionate and understanding world.
In peace,
Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini
Director of Education
