National Bus Safety Week & School Bus Driver Appreciation Day
October 16-20, 2023 and October 18, 2023
Every year during the third full week of October we celebrate School Bus Safety Week and Bus Driver Appreciation Day. During this week we’d like to stop and recognize the outstanding efforts of our dedicated school bus drivers.
Over 16,000 HWDSB students start and end their school days with a ride on a school bus. A bus driver’s kindness towards students is only outmatched by their commitment to ensuring they get to and from school safely. It goes without saying that our professional school bus drivers accept a tremendous responsibility to ensure that students remain safe and out of harm’s way each day.
If you are a motorist, remember to play your part in keeping students safe.
RED FLASHING LIGHTS = NO PASSING
When you see a stopped bus with red flashing lights, don’t forget to stop. This means students could be crossing the road.
FLASHING OVERHEAD AMBER LIGHTS = BUS IS SLOWING DOWN
If you see flashing amber lights, this means a bus is slowing down to make a stop. When this happens you should slow down, be prepared to stop, and watch out for students crossing the road.
We all share a part in making sure the roads are safe for school buses and students who ride them.
This week please take a moment to thank our school bus drivers for the important work they do!
